Internships at the Forestry Department
Five students successfully completed their internship in Semester II, 2017/2018 at the Forestry Department, in the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Government of Brunei Darussalam. The internship lasted for 14 weeks from Monday, 15 January till Saturday, 21 April 2018.
The students completed their internship at three different sites: |
- Nurizzati, Izzatul and Syahmina completed their internship on the Bukit Teraja Eco-Tourism project
- Zurina has worked with Sinar Tour Brunei
- Zurina was allocated to Wanzee Empolyment Agency, Brunei
These projects are described below.
Bukit Teraja Eco-Tourism
The project is based in the mountain range that connects the Bukit Teraja Protection Forest and Ulu Mendaram Conservation Forest. The area is characterized by thick primary forests and rich biodiversity that can provide extensive ecological tourism opportunities. It is also supported by strong indigenous communities (e.g. longhouses) and a rich cultural heritage. The great opportunities for ecosystem conservation would suport local livelihood including marketing of local products, research, and the creation of wildlife sanctuaries.
The interns made some recommendations for Eco-tourism Development:
- Formulation of Bukit Teraja Ecotourism Management Plan — to provide appropriate ecotourism activities, such as a zip line and nature trail
- Formulation of Bukit Teraja Marketing and Business Plan — the allocation of funds for the establishment, repair, and re-modelling of ecotourism infrastructure, such as chalets and resting huts
- Training for local communities — tour guides, homestay management and sustainable ecotourism practices
Sinar Tour
One of the projects on which Zurina worked was the Kampong Ayer Tourism Project.
