    Film-Induced Tourism

On Thursday, 21 May 2019, Dr Yong Liu presented a FASS seminar entitled 'Film-Induced Tourism Development in Brunei', discussing the research he has done together with Dr Shirley Chin Wee Lee on the potential for films made in Brunei to encourage tourists to visit the sites seen in the films.

Creative Industries Symposium

On Thursday, 26 April 2019, a symposium on 'Understanding the Creative Industry Ecologies in Brunei and Hong Kong' was held in the Senate Room of Chancellor Hall at UBD. There were four presentations from staff at FASS, UBD, and there were three presentations by staff from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

    PRISM UBD Film Festival 2nd Edition

On Monday, 23 April 2019, the 2nd PRISM Short Film Festival was held at UBD.

PRISM UBD Film Festival 2nd Edition is a platform that showcases creative works from undergraduate students majoring in Design and Creative Industries and English Studies from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Dr Yong Liu from Design and Creative Industries and Ms Mayyer Ling from English Studies co-hosted the festival this year.

Creative works include documentaries, fiction, experimental short films, public service announcements and music videos are all showcased at the PRISM platform.

Two Books Launched at UBD

On 22nd April 2019, two books titled Politics of the Brunei Sultanate 1804 – 1906: Enduring the Storm to the Blessed Shores and Melayu Islam Beraja, The Malay Islamic Monarchy in Negara Brunei Darussalam Prior to 1906: A Historical Study were launched at the Inspiring Hall, Student Centre, University Brunei Darussalam (UBD). The first book was written by Associate Professor Dr. Haji Awg Asbol bin Haji Mail, Associate Professor Ampuan Dr. Haji Brahim bin Ampuan Haji Tengah, Associate Professors at UBD and Haji Mohsin bin Abu Bakar, a local author; and the second book was written by five academic staff of UBD namely Associate Professor Dr. Haji Awg Asbol bin Haji Mail, Associate Professor Ampuan Dr. Haji Brahim bin Ampuan Haji Tengah, Dr. Nani Suryani binti Haji Abu Bakar, Dr. Hajah Asiyah Az-Zahra binti Haji Ahmad Kumpoh and Dr. Haji Tassim bin Haji Abu Bakar.

On Thursday, 18 April 2019, Professor Jonathan Rigg from Bristol University gave a FASS seminar entitled 'More than Urban: Viewing Urban Poverty Through a Rural Lens', in which he discussed the transition from rural to urban living in Thailand.

On Thursday, 28th March, 2019, Johannes Kurz gave a FASS seminar titled 'The South China Sea and how it turned into “Historically” Chinese Territory in 1975', describing his research into the background behind China's territorial claim over the South China Sea.

The Nguyen Dynasty of Vietnam

On Thursday, 14 March 2019, Liam Kelley of the Institute of Asian Studies, UBD, gave a FASS seminar entitled 'The Forgotten Role of the "Royal Nation" of Vietnam', in which he discussed the role of the final Nguyen Dynasty that lasted from 1802 till 1945 in developing the administration and education of Vietnam.

On Thursday, 7th March, 2019, Siti Mazidah Haji Mohamad gave a FASS seminar titled 'Mobile Youth: Self-Branding and Self-Promotion on Instagram' describing the research she has conducted on self-promotion via Instagram by young people in Brunei.

    English Teacher Preparation

On Thursday, 14th February, 2019, Mayyer Ling Binti Mohammad Tony Ling gave a FASS seminar titled 'Advancing Achievement through Value-Added Measures: A Study on English Teacher Preparation in Brunei' describing the research she has conducted together with Dr Rinni Marliyana Binti Haji Amran which will soon appear in a book published by Routledge.

Fishing in the Philippines

On Thursday, 7 February 2019, Magne Knudsen of FASS, UBD, gave a seminar entitled "Changing tides: Re-configuration of a low-capital, high-skill fisheries in the Central Visayas" in which he described his research on traditional knowledge and current practices by fishermen in Sibulan in the south of Negros Islands in the Philippines.

    SEAMEO SPAFA Workshop

From 28 till 31 January, 2019, Dr. Shafi Noor Islam participated in a four-day workshop as part of the SEAMEO SPAFA flagship programme on “Conservation in the Tropics”, a School-based Approach in Promoting Disaster Risk Management for Cultural Heritage.

During the workshop, he presented a paper on “History, Development and Significance of Kampong Ayer”.
