MA in English Language and Linguistics

The MA in English Language and Linguistics by Research programme is designed to provide students skills in the analysis and description of the English language as well as help them develop analytical skills so that they are able to pursue careers in a wide range of disciplines.

Degree Requirements

Applicants are required to submit a research proposal of approximately 500-1,000 words.

Entry Requirements

(a) A first degree (first or second class Honours) in Linguistics or equivalent, or (b) Relevant working experience.

Language Requirements

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English

Planned Intake

Maximum 10 students

Aims and Scope

The aim of the MA in English Language and Linguistics by Research programme is to equip graduate students with the skills necessary to conduct detailed research involving in-depth analysis and description in any area connected with linguistics.


Upon completion of the programme, candidates will submit a thesis of up to 60,000 words

Areas of Research / Specialization

The current members of staff in the programme have considerable expertise in a wide range of areas in Linguistics. These include Phonetics and Phonology, Sociolinguistics and Discourse Analysis, amongst others.

Full-Time/ Part-Time

Period of Candidature

Full-time: 12 months; Part-time: 24 months


Final dissertation to be assessed by at least one external examiner and one internal examiner who shall be a full-time staff member of the University.
