MA in English Literature

The MA in English Literature by Research programme is primarily designed to help students develop the skills necessary to conduct research in a current field of English Literature.

Degree Requirements

Applicants are required to submit a research proposal of approximately 500-1,000 words.

Entry Requirements

(a) A first degree (first or second class Honours) in Linguistics or equivalent, or (b) Relevant working experience.

Language Requirements

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English

Maximum 10 students

Aims and Scope

The aim of this programme is allow the more capable student to be able to make a significant contribution to the academic study of some aspect in English Literature. In addition, the MA English Literature by Research programme will help graduate students develop advanced language and critical thinking skills that will contribute greatly to their personal development and future career pursuits.


Upon completion of the programme, candidates will submit a thesis of up to 60,000 words

Areas of Research / Specialization

It is expected that the MA in English Literature by Research programme will initially focus on research areas in which there is considerable expertise among the current members of staff. This would be in the areas of 19th Century Women’s Fiction, Twentieth Century British & American Literature, and Postcolonial Literature, in particular the English Literature of South East Asia.

Period of Candidature

Full-time: 12 months; Part-time: 24 months


Final dissertation to be assessed by at least one external examiner and one internal examiner who shall be a full-time staff member of the University.


Demand for a postgraduate programme in English Literature is likely to come from Bruneian as well as foreign students.

Future Development

It is envisaged that an MA in English Literature by Coursework can be offered in the near future, if additional resources are made available.
