For the past 15 years the Masters programme in History by Research has attracted many graduate applicants with a strong backgrounds and interest in historical studies.

Research Facilities

UBD offers academic expertise through its academic staff, and degree programmes offered by Historical Studies Programme have proven to be successful. In addition, historical studies in this country are supported by various private and public centres containing historical material and data.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must possess a degree (minimum Second Class Honours) from Universiti Brunei Darussalam or any other university recognised by Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Aims and Scope

This Degree of MA in History by Research is offered with a view to providing candidates seeking a postgraduate qualification in historical studies with advanced knowledge, skills and the capability to locate and use historical materials through critical reflection on and analysis of current developments in historical research.


The programme involves original and advanced research on a suitable and approved topic, leading to a thesis of between 40,000 to 60,000 words of text, but excluding tables, diagrams, charts, appendices, references and notes. Where necessary, candidates may be asked to audit such undergraduate modules as are deemed useful and relevant to their research topic.

Areas of Research / Specialization

The Masters in History by Research is offered in the following aspects of Brunei, Southeast Asian and Asian History: Political History; Social and Economic History; Islam; Regional Affairs and Organisation. Other topics of historical research may also be considered.
