Description

The PhD in Applied Linguistics programme is designed to provide graduate students the ability to conduct detailed and independent research involving in-depth analysis and description in any area connected with linguistics.

Degree Requirements

Applications to the PhD programme must be accompanied by a detailed research proposal of approximately 1000 words

Entry Requirements

A Master's degree in Linguistics or a relevant subject area.

Language Requirements

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English

Maximum 5 students

Aims and Scope

The aim of the PhD in Applied Linguistics programme is to equip graduate students with the skills necessary to conduct detailed research involving in-depth analysis and description in any area connected with linguistics.

Structure

Upon completion of the programme, candidates will submit a thesis of up to 100,000 words

Areas of Research / Specialization

The current members of staff in the programme have considerable expertise in a wide range of areas in Linguistics. These include Phonetics and Phonology, Sociolinguistics and Discourse Analysis, amongst others.

Full-time and part-time

Period of Candidature

Full-time: 36 months; Part-time: 72 months

Assessment

Final dissertation to be assessed by at least one external examiner and one internal examiner who shall be a full-time staff member of the University.
