PhD in English Literature

The PhD in English Literature programme is primarily designed to help students develop the skills necessary to conduct in-depth and independent research in a current field of English Literature.

Degree Requirements

Applications to the PhD programme must be accompanied by a detailed research proposal of approximately 1000 words

Entry Requirements

A Master's degree in English Literature or a relevant subject area.

Language Requirements

A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English

Maximum 5 students

Aims and Scope

The aim of this programme is allow graduate student to be able to make a significant contribution to the academic study of some aspect in English Literature.


Upon completion of the programme, candidates will submit a thesis of up to 100,000 words

Areas of Research / Specialization

It is expected that the PhD in English Literature by programme will initially focus on research areas in which there is considerable expertise among the current members of staff. This would be in the areas of 19th Century Women’s Fiction, Twentieth Century British & American Literature, and Postcolonial Literature, in particular the English Literature of South East Asia.

Period of Candidature

Full-time: 36 months; Part-time: 72 months


Final dissertation to be assessed by at least one external examiner and one internal examiner who shall be a full-time staff member of the University.
