Description

The Historical Studies Programme, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, offers a Doctor of Philosophy Programme by research on a full time basis. The programme involves original and comprehensive research on a topic approved by Universiti Brunei Darussalam, leading to a thesis of not more than 100,000 words of text. Emphasis is given to new findings in historical research and originality in analysis.

UBD offers academic expertise through its academic staff, and degree programmes offered by Historical Studies Programme have proven to be successful. In addition, historical studies in this country are supported by various private and public centres.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must possess a Master Degree in History from the Universiti Brunei Darussalam or from any other university recognized by Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Appropriate experience and publications may also be taken into account.

Medium of Instruction

English/Malay.

Aims and Scope

This programme aims to provide candidates with advanced knowledge, skills and the capability to locate and use historical materials through critical reflection on and analysis of current developments in historical research. These skills will enable candidates to assess, review and undertake original research in their chosen field.

Structure

The research will lead to the completion of a thesis of not more than 100,000 words of text. Emphasis is given to new findings in historical research and originality in analysis.

Areas of Research / Specialization

The Doctor of Philosophy Programme in History is offered in the following aspects of Brunei, Asian and Southeast Asian History: Political History; Social and Economic History; Islam; Regional Affairs. Other topics of historical research may be considered.
