Hong Kong + Taiwanese — HK2 : 2799

S1 = Taiwanese female
S2 = Hong Kong male

Context: S2 is talking about why he find it more comfortable to live in Brunei than his native Hong Kong.

S2 : ... i think this you know rain forest (.) is really important. because you know brunei actually is <tapping sound> in the heart of you know this rain forest you know

S1 : wind?

S2 : the you know the rain forest you know? i mean all s- (.) green stuff? around us.

Intended Words : this, rain forest, heart

Heard as : days, wind forced, hot

Discussion : S2 has [w] at the start of rain, and it is not clear that forest has two syllables.

Even though S2 was talking about Brunei and the environment, S1 was unable to understand rain forest, and she asked him about wind. S2 then tries to explain it, and in fact in his attempted explanatation, he does have a clearer [r] at the start of rain; but even with this explanation, S1 was unable to transcribe rain forest correctly. She knew the wind forced was not right, but she could not come up with a better guess.

Misunderstanding heart as hot is not too surprising, as hot would be pronounced as [hɑ:t] by many people, especially those influenced by an American accent. In fact, S2 pronounces hot as [hɒt] rather than [hɑ:t] (listen, for example, to his pronunciation of flaming hot in HK1 : 1211); but S1 would not know that.
