Indonesian + Taiwanese — Ind2 : 1650

S1 = Taiwanese female
S2 = Indonesian male

Context: They are talking about places to visit in the Middle East.

S2 : ... what you have in cairo erm (.) well you got different kind of er (.) er architecture meaning the: PRE-islamic architecture

S1 : mm

Intended Words: pre-islamic

Heard as: (?)

Discussion: S1 was unable to understand this, so she just wrote a question mark in her transcription. The problem seems to be that islamic is spoken quite fast and not very loudly. Possibly, the emphasis on pre and lack of emphasis on islamic contributed to the difficulty.

Note that S1 responded with the 'mm' backchannel even though she did not understand all the words. Presumably, she judged that it was not necessary to hear all the words for the conversation to proceed smoothly.
