Indonesian + Taiwanese — Ind2 : 809

S1 = Taiwanese female
S2 = Indonesian male

Context: S1 has asked S2 about his Muslim beliefs, and he is talking about imparting religious knowledge to his children.

S2 : i inculcate er (.) disseminate er islamic values to my children (.) er but then i also open their mind

Intended Words: inculcate, disseminate

Heard as: got, disminit

Discussion: S1 did not understand these words, so she just guessed the sounds.

This seems to be a lexical issue, as these two words are not common in English. While it is true that S2 pronounces inculcate as [ɪŋkəlkreɪt], with an unexpected [r] in the final syllable, and also that he pronounces diseminate as [dɪsɪmɪneɪt], with [ɪ] rather than the expected [e] in the second syllable, it is not clear if these features contribute to the lack of understanding. Subsequently, S1 confirmed that she indeed does not know these two words, and she was bemused about them even when she saw them typed out.
