Indian Councils Act
Full Title : The Background to the Indian Councils Act (1861): Indian Government and White Supremacy in Post-Mutiny India.
Researcher : Paul Brumpton
Brief Outline :
This project examines the conflict between non-official Europeans in India and the Calcutta government through an examination of an important piece of post-Mutiny legislation. At the heart of the conflict lay the determination of non-official Europeans to claim special racial privileges and the Act of 1861 was passed in order to prevent then using the Supreme Legislative Council as a vehicle for their concerns.
