/r/ and /l/
/r/ is usually trilled or tapped, though it may sometimes be an approximant.
In the word list, parang ‘machete’ and barang ‘thing’ both have a trilled /r/, cari ‘search’ has a tap, and both jari ‘finger’ and rumah ‘house’ have an approximant.
In ‘The North Wind and the Sun’ passage, most tokens of /r/ are tapped, but the /r/ in the second token of pangambara ‘traveller’ is trilled, and so is the /r/ at the end of batangkar ‘argue’, while the /r/ in diurang ‘they’ and also at the end of mamancar ‘shine’ is an approximant. The first /r/ in banar-banar ‘really’ is dropped, but that is the only instance of omitted /r/.
/l/ is generally clear in all positions, including at the end of words such as sambal ‘shrimp paste’ and wakil ‘representative’ in the word list and also pasal ‘about’ in the passage.
