Hong Kong + Taiwanese — HK2 : 274
S1 = Taiwanese female
S2 = Hong Kong male
Context: S2 is talking about getting married while he was studying in Texas.
S2 : ... in texas you know at that time (.) we are you know study in texas tech you know in the graduate school. in lubbock texas. er northern you know er (.) west you know part of the texas.
Intended Words : Tech, Lubbock, northern, west
Heard as : there, lot of, low term, where's
Discussion : The misudnerstanding of Tech and Lubbock are not too surprising, as they are names; and Lubbock is spoken rather fast, as a single syllable.
But in addition, S1 was unable to understand northern and west. In northern, S2 has [l] rather than [n] at the start, as is common for Hong Kong English (Deterding, Wong & Kirkpatrick, 2008), though the medial [ft] for a medial TH is unexpected (either [f] or [t] might be expected, but both together is a bit unusual); and west has no final [t].
