Chinese + Bruneian — Ch : 584
S1 = Brunei female
S2 = Chinese female
Context: S1 is asking S2 about travelling.
S1 : ... so if you could travel ANYwhere in the world
S2: hm.
S1: where would you want to go?
S2: hhh maybe: i will choose (.) tibet.
S1: tibet
S2: tibet nepal and india (.) and bhutan (.) it's nearby
S1: aha
S2: yeah.
S1: okay so why do you want to go there
S2: be:cause: i like the scenery.
Intended Words: Bhutan, nearby
Discussion: S2 pronounces Bhutan with a [d] rather than [t] as the medial consonant, probably influenced by the Mandarin Chinese name for the country: 不丹 (Bu Dan). S1 was herefore unable to recognise the place.
S2 pronounces nearby with [l] at the start.
The failure to identify Bhutan almost certainly contributed to the failure to understand nearby.
