Brief Outline
Digital Memoir of the South China Sea is an artistic research in contemporary conceptual art through digital photography and imaging to decontextualize the cultural artefacts and natural wonders found along the coastline of the South China Sea in Brunei and Hong Kong. This cross-cultural research is set to explore the visual language that is created through the recontextualization of artefacts and natural objects with discourse on nostalgia and art. From an artistic perspective, the South China Sea is less about current political issue of maritime space. This region is an inspiring cultural and natural treasure. The aim of this practice-based enquiry in digital art is meant to allow viewers to transcend the boundary of South China Sea in terms of space and time, and to reach a nostalgic state of mind. This series of digital art will be displayed as an installation at a group exhibition, Mural•list•mania: Multimedia Art Exhibition, in Hong Kong from 7 to 14 March 2014. Also, part of this research will be presented in the Workshop: Reframing the South China Sea, organized by the Institute of Asian Studies, UBD, in 11 to 13 November 2013. After the presentation and exhibition, the manuscript will be submitted for consideration by relevant journals to publish.
