FASS Student Short Films Selected for Asia Rising 2022 Screening

14th March 2022

Three UBD short films, Not Toaster, Crescendo, and Sonder, made by FASS DCI students, have been selected to be part of Asia Rising 2022: A Showcase of Short Films. Asia Rising is an annual film screening of creations from universities in ASEAN, Japan, Korea and China, and is organised by the National University of Singapore (NUS). The three selected short films will be screened online between 1 to 9 April 2022.

This is the second consecutive year that three short films (the maximum number allowed from each of the AUN Member Universities and ASEAN+3 University Network) from UBD have been selected into this annual film screening; it is also the first time a UBD animated short film (Sonder) made by DCI students will be screened in a regional film festival.

During the 4th Prism UBD Short Film Festival in December 2021, Not Toaster won the Best Short Film Award, while Halim Ashari won the Best Director Award for his directorial work in Crescendo.

Following the successful inauguration of the first Asia Rising in April 2021 which featured 10 student films from UBD, NUS, and De La Salle University in the Philippines, this year's Asia Rising 2022, with its new theme of ‘Slow Connection’, aims to spur young filmmakers to continue pursuing their creative craft and to embolden them for future collaborations across borders by presenting the best from each country. Once again, DCI students will take this precious opportunity as a platform to showcase their creative talents and promote Brunei's unique cultural identity.

In particular, the Not Toaster crewmembers are: Rahim Sofri, Dhiyaurrahman Suhaimi, Rafeatul Zaini, Hisham Fitri, and Sulaiman Fitri.

The Crescendo crewmembers are: Halim Ashari, Azeem Majid, Shakir Andy, Syahmi Batrisyia, and Nazri Awang.

The Sonder crewmembers are: Yasmin Hazwan, Halim Ashari, Wallace Chong, Arifah Zhafirah, Dyg Nursyazwani, and Sylvester Chan.

The NUS organiser is currently finalising the details for the screening, and a viewing link and instructions will be sent to interested viewers in due course. Three introductive videos about the student filmmakers will be also uploaded onto the online platform for Asia Rising 2022 alongside their screening films as additional content for viewers who are interested in the filmmaking process.
