Background
Dr. Muhammad Najib bin Noorashid (Najib Noorashid) graduated with Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education (First Class Honours) specialising in Malay Language and Linguistics and Malay Literature from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (2011). During his undergraduate study at UBD, he was awarded the University Book Prize for four consecutive years, as well as the University Silver Medal 2007/2011 and the BLNG Academic Excellence Certificate for outstanding academic achievement. He then pursued his postgraduate studies, receiving a Masters degree in Sociolinguistics from the University of Essex, United Kingdom (2013), and a Ph.D in Applied Linguistics from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (2020).
He had previously worked as a Journalist in the News, Sports and Current Affairs (2007) and as an Editor in the Foreign Desk Unit (World News) at Radio Television Brunei (2014-2015). He was also a Guest Lecturer at Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, Brunei and Yala Rajabhat University, Thailand. He had served as a Language Researcher at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (2020-2022) and as Associate Consultant (with i-Bayan Venture, Brunei, 2022). He is also an Editor and a Reviewer for a number of international journals and local publisher.
With an interest in contemporary sociolinguistic studies (Malay and English), he focuses on research, writing and presenting academic papers related on the issues of linguistic diversity, culture and education, as well as their interrelations with religion, race, and as part of transnational studies in the Malay World and beyond. He has published an academic book and papers with Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Springer, and Palgrave Macmillan, among others. In 2013, he won the First Prize in the Feature Writing Competition for the PEAsean Writing Competition.
Dr. Muhammad Najib bin Noorashid (Najib Noorashid) memperolehi Ijazah Sarjana Muda Sastera Pendidikan Menengah (Kepujian Kelas Pertama) pengkhususan Bahasa Melayu dan Linguistik Melayu serta Kesusasteraan Melayu dari Universiti Brunei Darussalam (2011). Ketika menjalani pengajian, beliau menerima Hadiah Buku Universiti selama empat tahun berturut-turut, selain Pingat Perak Universiti 2007/2011 dan Sijil Kecemerlangan Akademik BLNG bagi pencapaian akademik cemerlang. Beliau kemudiannya meneruskan pengajian pascasiswazah dan memperolehi ijazah Masters in Sociolinguistics dari University of Essex, United Kingdom (2012), dan Ph.D in Applied Linguistics dari Universiti Brunei Darussalam (2020).
Beliau pernah bekerja sebagai Pemberita di Bahagian Berita, Sukan dan Hal Ehwal Semasa (2007) dan Penyunting di Unit Foreign Desk (Berita Dunia/World News) di Radio Televisyen Brunei (2014 2015). Beliau juga pernah menjadi Pensyarah Jemputan di Kolej Universiti Perguruan Ugama Seri Begawan (KUPU SB, Brunei) dan Yala Rajabhat University (Thailand). Beliau pernah berkhidmat sebagai Penyelidik Bahasa di Fakulti Sastera dan Sains Sosial, UBD (2020-2022) dan Associate Consultant (dengan i-Bayan Venture, Brunei, 2022). Beliau juga merupakan Penyunting dan Penyemak bagi sebilangan jurnal antarabangsa dan penerbit tempatan.
Meminati bidang kajian sosiolinguistik kontemporari (Melayu dan Inggeris), beliau kini memfokuskan penyelidikan, penulisan dan pembentangan kertas ilmiah berkaitan dengan isu-isu kepelbagaian linguistik, kebudayaan dan pendidikan serta hubungannya dengan agama, ras, dan sebagai sebahagian daripada kajian transnasional dalam Alam Melayu dan peringkat antarabangsa. Beliau telah menerbitkan buku dan makalah-makalah ilmiah cetakan Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Springer, dan Palgrave Macmillan, antara lain. Pada tahun 2013, beliau pernah memenangi Hadiah Pertama dalam Feature Writing Competition bagi PEAsean Writing Competition.
