    UBD-FASS Term Screening: 7th Edition

By Annazabel Binti Alexandar   |   7 May 2025

As an annual showcase of refreshing student-made short films in Brunei, the 7th UBD-FASS Term Screening was held on 28 April 2025 at the Pro-Chancellor Arts Centre theatre at UBD. A total of 21 short screen works across six genres—Animation, Documentary, Experimental, Fiction, Music Video, and Promotional Video—were featured in the programme lineup of this year’s term screening. All of these short screen works were recently produced by students currently enrolled in four higher institutions across Brunei.

Among the 21 selected short screen works, 15 titles were made by FASS DCI students at UBD: four documentary shorts from the AX-2309 Digital Photography and Videography module (supervised by Dr. Marcelo Schellini), ten experimental and fiction short films out of AX-1202 Introduction to Screen Studies module (taught by Dr. Yong Liu), and one MV work from this year’s Spectrum Graduation Exhibition. In addition, three titles were made by students from Kolej International Graduate Studies (KIGS), two titles from Politeknik Brunei, and one title from Mahakarya Institute of the Arts Asia (MIAA).

The screening was, as has been the usual custom, followed by a highly anticipated commentary session given by two invited media professionals: Tuan Farid Azlan Ghani, a script writer, director, producer, and actor with over 20 years in the screen industries in Malaysia and Brunei; and Tuan Amali Hj Roslin, an experienced senior producer in TV, film, and drama productions, especially with expertise in live broadcasts of musical programmes and TV dramas. Both of the invited commentators were impressed by students’ visual storytelling skills demonstrated during the screening, and offered very specific and constructive feedback to all of the showcased student screen works.

The highlight of the Term Screening is that it is the first time ever that this annual screening was organised and operated independently and thoroughly by four DCI-major students who took the AX-4306 Advanced Production module under Dr Yong Liu’s supervision and via several technical training sessions facilitated by UniDigital education technology officer Mohammad Arif bin Dr Hj Sablee. The four co-organisers of the 7th UBD-FASS Term Screening are: Siti Khaliysah Zahidah Dayinie Binti Abdullah Zuhairy, Insha Jawed, Annazabel Binti Alexandar, and Kim Chaeyeon.

Some of the screened short films will be automatically eligible for submitting to the 8th Edition PRISM UBD Short Film Festival, which is run yearly across November and December, should they fit into any competition categories later decided for the 2025 Edition.
